From Invoice Back to Estimate, in One Click

Invoices are where money moves, but estimates are where the deal gets shaped. We added a direct link from any invoice back to its originating estimate so the context is never more than a click away.

Invoices tend to be the document people argue about. A line item looks off, a discount is missing, a quantity doesn't match what someone remembers agreeing to over email three weeks ago. The answer almost always lives upstream — in the estimate that started the conversation.

Until now, getting back to that estimate meant leaving the invoice, opening the Estimates list, and hunting by customer name or date. It was the kind of small, repeated friction that doesn't show up in any single support ticket but shows up everywhere.

Why we built it

When an estimate is converted into an invoice, the relationship between the two is real and worth preserving. The invoice isn't a fresh document — it's the next stage of a quote that someone already negotiated, revised, and approved. Treating those as disconnected records forces users to reconstruct context that the system already knows.

So we made the link explicit. From the invoice detail page, you can now jump straight to the originating estimate View the Estimate Linked to an Invoice. No search, no guessing which version was the final one.

What it unlocks

The obvious win is faster lookups when a customer disputes a charge or an internal reviewer wants to see how a number was originally arrived at. But the more interesting effect is that invoices and estimates start to feel like one continuous record instead of two parallel ones. You can audit pricing decisions, check what was promised versus what was billed, and hand off a deal to a teammate without writing a paragraph of context in Slack.

For teams that quote heavily before they bill — agencies, contractors, anyone with a long sales motion — this collapses a workflow that used to span two tabs into a single trail.

What's next

This is the first half of a tighter connection between estimates and the documents downstream of them. We're looking at making the same jump work in the other direction, surfacing estimate-to-invoice status more clearly in lists, and exposing the relationship in exports so it's visible outside the app too.
